The 46 Defense
Buddy Ryan who was the defensive coordinator for Chicago in the earlier to mid 80a
created the 46. Coach Ryan got the name 46 defense from safety Doug Plank who wore
the number 46. In the 1985-86 season Chicago won Super Bowl XX. Chicago's defense
was one of most dominating defenses the NFL has seen in its history.
What made the 46 defense so successful was that the Defensive Ends would line up on the
outside shoulders of both Offensive Tackles. This allowed the Defensive Ends to get a
better angle for getting a good pass rush on the opposing team's Quarterback. When you
add a blitz from the Linebackers or Strong Safety, it only adds to the confusion for the
offensive line.
The 4-6 defense is weak against multiple receiver sets, at it was designed to stop offenses
with conventional formations, such as the I-Form Normal. If the offense is in a multiple
receiver sets, it forces the 4-6 defense to spread out. This will leave 1 on 1 coverage with
both Cornerbacks and only the Free Safety helping deep. If the defense is not able to get
pressure on the QB quickly, then the 46 defense can be burned deep.
The 46 defense is still run in the pro game today. Tennessee Titans has had the most
success with running it, but last year their pass defense slipped to last in the league.
Most of that was due to injuries, rather than the 46 defensive scheme itself.
In Madden 20003 there are 4 different playbooks you can choose from. One of them is the
46 playbook. We've broken down each play along with their strengths and weaknesses.
Here's the first one.
Man Lock
WLB Man coverage
MLB Blitz
SLB Man coverage
RCB Locked in man coverage
FS Deep middle zone
SS Man coverage
LCB Locked in man coverage
RE Slants outward to rightside
WDT Rushes straight up
SDT Rushes straight up
LE Slants outward to left side
Cover type Cover 1
Strengths Shuts down outside runs to both sides and does a good job against
inside runs. 5 man pass rush with the MLB being the extra pass
rusher.
WeaknessesCBs are locked up in 1 on 1 coverage. The FS plays a deep zone
over the middle. If the offense sends multiple receivers deep, one
of them will be open with 1 on 1 coverage. Watch out for weak
side screens.
Key Notes Great run defense that shuts down both the inside and outside run
plays. Weak against multiple receiving sets. The MLB can bring a
lot of of heat on the pass rush.
