2002 Team Outlook
Kansas City has a lot of talent on offense ranking fifth in the league in offense last season. Madden 2003 doesn't reflect that with only a 79 overall ranking on offense. Kansas City could sneak into the playoffs this as wild card team, but more than likely will finish around .500 in the AFC West.
The offense was led by last year's league rushing leader. He had over 1,500 yards and was a surprise to many. Use him to control the clock and set up the pass. The quarterback situation is in good shape, though the starting quarterback tends to throw a lot of interceptions, which is reflected by his awareness rating of only 79. Make sure you have an open a receiver and not try to force the pass into tight coverage. Kansas City has some talent at receiver and tight end. They brought in Detroit's top receiver last year to help bring in more consistent number one receiver. All the receivers lack speed, accept the number four receiver on the default depth chart. The starting tight end is the best game, look to pass to him often. The offensive line is the best in game with a 96 overall rating. Look to run behind the right side of the line to pick most of your rushing yardage. Don't worry about the left side pass protection. Kansas City brought in former New Orleans all pro left tackle to help protect the starting quarterback.
Kansas City defense is weak and will have a hard time stopping anyone. You will need to score a lot of points on offense if you hope to win. The left end is the only player on the defensive line who can generate a pass rush. Kansas City did a draft a defensive tackle in this year's pro draft. He could become one of top defensive tackles in the next few years. The starting linebackers are some of the worst in the game. Only the middle linebacker could start on most pro teams. You will have problems stopping the run and pass. As bad as the linebackers are the secondary is even worse. Look to play a lot of zones and hope you can get a decent pass rush from the D-line.
The special teams are decent. Both kicker and punter are solid. The return game may need an upgrade. The default punt and kick returner is slow.
