2002 Team Outlook
Jacksonville has been hit by the salary cap bug over the last few seasons. When the team first came into the league, they looked like they were heading in the right direction by building the team with key free agents and drafting well. Eventually all their high priced players caught up with them and now they have to rebuild. The cupboard is not totally bare, but this team isn't what it was just few short years ago. Look for Jacksonville to finish around 6-10 or 7-9 in the new AFC South. Outside of the top players on offense, there just isn't much else.

The offense remains the teams strength.Their left handed quarterback has slowed down some and no longer has the mobility he once he had. He still has good accuracy and power in his arm. The starting running back is talented, but gets hurt frequently. He never can seem to stay healthy and for Jacksonville to be successful on offense he needs to be out there on the field. At receiver, Jacksonville has one of the best receivers in the game who has consistently put up big numbers each year. The rest of the receiving unit is rather weak and you will need to find a number 2 receiver if you hope to have any successes playing Jacksonville. The offensive line has lost perhaps the best left tackle the game has every seen. His replacement is only shell of what the former starting left tackle was. When playing Jacksonville look to throw a lot of passes to their star receiver in clutch situations. Their running back is talented, but you will need to watch him very closely because he tends to get injured. The offensive line is not very strong, but there is some talent to run behind on the right side of the line. Look to pound the ball on that side for best results.

The defense has been hit hard by salary cap issues. Jacksonville lost six starters from last years team, and you can really see the impact it has on what used to be one of the top defenses in past Madden games. The defensive line is the strength of the defense. It all starts with their veteran right end, who should be able to generate pressure from the weak side. Jacksonville has a pair of up and coming defensive tackles who should only get better, both have good speed to put pressure on the quarterback up the middle. The starting linebackers are a bunch of no names, though they have some talent. The weak side linebacker has some speed and the middle linebacker will make some tackles. The problem lies at strong side linebacker where the starter will have hard time stopping the run and covering the tight end. The secondary is another unit that has been hit by the salary cap. The starting cornerbacks have some speed, but lack awareness. The safeties fair no better, look to play a lot of zones or man coverage. Try not to blitz much and hope the defensive line can get a pass rush on its own.

The special teams like the rest of the Jacksonville team is weak. Only the punter is worthy of not being released. Look to upgrade the kicker as soon as you can. The return game does have some players to return kicks and punts, but they are slow.
