2002 Team Outlook
How many games Houston wins this year depends on how fast the team chemistry develops. The offensive line is not like most first year expansion teams. With a young quarterback learning the ropes, this will be major plus for the offensive success that Houston hopes to achieve this season. Look for Houston to finish last in the new AFC South. However, they will be more competitive than previous first year expansion teams.
The offense is built around two things. The first one is Houston's number 1 draft pick. The young rookie quarterback will need to learn on the job, but he has the tools to succeed. He has gun for an arm and good accuracy. These two tools alone will make him a successful quarterback in the league and Madden 2003. The second thing Houston's offense is built around is the offensive line. Houston paid a lot of money to protect their young quarterback with the offensive line that was built around him. The left tackle is for sure to be inducted into the Hall of Fame when he retires. The right tackle is one of the better right tackles in the game. The center is also one of the better players at his position in Madden 2003. The guards are average at best, but they should do fine in Houston's first season. The running game has a blue collar type back, he won't break a lot big runs off, but he will move the chains. The receivers are shaky and will need to be addressed through free agency, draft or trades.
The defensive line has one decent player and that is at the right end position. He doesn't have much speed, so getting any type of pressure from him or the rest of the line will be problem. The linebackers are the strength of the defense. Houston will be running a 3-4 zone blitz scheme. They have two linebackers who will fit the scheme pretty good. The problem is at right out side linebacker and the other inside linebacker. Both are not very good and neither has a lot of speed. The secondary has two really good corners, but the safety situation is a mess and will need to be addressed as soon you can. Look to play a lot of 3-4 defenses, with zone and man blitz schemes mixed in.
Special Teams is decent only because they have a great kick and punt returner. The kicker is average and the punter is weak.
