Here are a few of my wants for 2005:
Tackling
Gang tackling is nice, and it is good to see a few extra's, and the ability to tackle the QB with any animation as opposed to the weak QB tackles last year.
However, what I would like to see is a more realistic tackling subsystem. Urlacher, Spikes, Lewis, Dawkins etc should be the ones laying the big hits, not Nate Clements and other smaller defenders. Tackle animations should vary depending on size and tackling ability. This will, naturally, require more animations. Also while we are on the topic of tackle animations, I want to see REALLY big hits, there just doesn't seem to be huge hits in Madden yet.
Also, a really cool feature would be dynamic tackling. For example, sometimes I find myself coming in for a diving hit while another defender gets there just a little bit earlier, hence causing me to dive into nothing and just bounce off. I'd like to see every tackle have the ability to attract up to, say, 2 more defenders after the animation has started, making it a dynamic gang tackle. The extra defenders don't have to be making some spectacular animation in the tackle, just instead of bouncing of a tackle animation in progress, why not make these defenders atleast pile up behinf the main tackler, it would look much more realistic.
Going on, a 'dynamic gang tackle' should cause the ball carrier to lose momentum and finish up even, perhaps, going backwards in some instances. It is very, very rare a ball carrier, especially a HB going up the middle, should only be tackled by one or two people, these don't have to be full on gang tackle animations with 3+ people, all that needs to be done is the ability for extra defenders to "join up" with the tackle and perhaps add extra force. This would mean the game also needs to differentiate the strength of the tackler to stop a ball carrier in his tracks. A big HB should always run over a smaller CB, while a LB should cause more of a change in direction. With dynamic tackling, this would make the defence aspect of the game incredible.
Special teams
Kick returns specifically need a makeover. The blocking for one is very unrealistic, I want to see a "wall" formed for the kick returner as often seen in real life, rather than the scattered mess we see in 2004 currently.
Goalline
This also needs massive work. With the ability of my dynamic gang tackling idea, including the ability to force baller carriers no further forward with more people, goalline defence would be much more realistic. Also, I want to see offensive blockers getting low and the ability to jump the line into the endzone. It basically comes back to tackle animations also, where defenders should have similiar abilities to stop the ball carrier.
Catching
Catching is better this year, however on long balls with defenders in close, i'd like to see airbourne catches forcing the WR to land on another part of the body other than the feet, for example, his back. This would make long throws with hard defence less of a problem should you miss the tackle after the catch.
Superbowls
What the hell are EA doing here? come on guys, Madden 95 had better Superbowl celebrations, atleast there were fireworks! (or atleast it sounded like fireworks ;)). I want the Superbowl to have atmosphere, emotion, I want it to be hyped and touted so damn much, my palms get sweaty just thinking about it. Why not have a full player introduction sequence or something? seriously, these are easy points for Madden here.
Crowd
As per my Superbowl rant, I want more atmosphere from the crowd in every game, not just the Superbowl. Scoring a TD at home should have reactions guys, not silence. Also, interceptions, fumbles, turnovers in general, big hits etc should cause a relevant fuss.
And that about wraps it up. Agree, disagree?
