View Full Version : How About Fleshing Out The Sidelines?

Okay, this issue has been bugging me for a long time. Why does Madden and NCAA football only have about 12 players on each sideline? The sega football offerings have much more fleshed-out sidelines and it goes a surprisingly long way towards adding to the realism.

Obviously, the sideline players need not be as detailed as the players rendered on the field, but they should have proper jersey numbers and have at least matching physical characteristics as the player who is supposed to be wearing that number, e.g., if number 25 is a slender 5'8" DB with dark skin tone, you should not see him standing on the sidelines transformed into a chunky white 6'3" offensive lineman. In other words, make sure the scaling and basic physical characteristics are correct. This adds a lot more realism than the usual "wallpaper" sideline personnel that EA currently uses.

Although this might be tough to do, it would also be nice to see the sideline players react to the on-field plays, e.g., raise their arms/pump their fists after a long run/pass or have them jumping up and down after a TD. Sega does this to a limited extent (some players clap after a good play).

Frankly, the sideline personnel issue and the teams' rushing the field at the start of the game brings one painful point to light: the current generation of consoles probably can't properly render an entire football team. That's too bad, because the sparse sidelines and tiny crowd of players running onto the field just emphasizes the gap between game and reality. Then again, it's something we can look forward to in future iterations!

Oh, and don't forget to have the Notre Dame team coming out of the entrance from the north end zone, not the brick wall in the south end zone. Perhaps EA can add that silly leprechaun to the mascot lineup as well?
